WHY DO WE HATE OURSELVES SO MUCH?

What a week I have had…I ran a Beautiful Minds course in Sydney and had the most wonderful group of teen girls doing my course. The girls were all aged between 12 – 15 years of age, all gorgeous, kind, smart, funny, wonderful individuals. Why then, do so many young girls hate who they see staring back at them in the mirror? It always makes me feel incredibly sad when I hear the negative self talk and inner bully that rears its ugly head. My job, along with my incredible team of highly skilled educators, is to take these young minds and empower them, inspire them to believe that anything is possible.

One thing I really focus on in my workshop is that you need to take responsibility each day to choose the thoughts you are going to have for the day. It is your mind and you need to train it to think positively. We are all encouraged to exercise at least 30 minutes each day so our body can be fit and healthy. What about our mind? We need to take the same amount of time and dedication and focus on being positive and attracting good things into our world.

My tips for making your mind as strong as possible:

1: Find a daily affirmation that you can repeat every morning and every evening. Write it on a card and stick it somewhere you will see it every day. Laminate it and stick it in the shower, on your mirror or near your bed. Let it be the first thing you read every morning upon waking up and the last thing you read before going to bed.

2: Find a meditation that encourages positive thinking. Download one from iTunes or You Tube and listen to this every night as you fall asleep. These positive messages will feed your brain good thoughts as you fall asleep.

3: Remove the word “can’t” from your vocabulary.

4: If you do not believe in yourself, who will?

5: Stop labeling yourself, “I have low self-esteem” , “I lack confidence.” All this does is box you into a negative thought pattern that will spiral out of control.

6: Even if in the beginning, you do not believe all the positive things you are saying or listening to, its okay. It may take a few days, a few weeks or a few months, but you will start to reprogram your mind.

7: As a child, you believed you could do or be anything. Society, our family and ourselves have caused our minds to have a melt down and we need to stop, reboot and start again.

8: Finally, get out of your own head space and go and volunteer at a soup kitchen or shelter. There is so much to be grateful for!
